BayStar Case Study

Bayport Polymers LLC (Baystar™) is a joint venture between Total Petrochemicals & Refining USA, Inc., Novealis Holdings LLC and Borealis. On Feb. 28th, 2019, Baystar™ held a ceremony for the groundbreaking of their new 625,000 metric ton-per-year Borstar® polyethylene unit in Pasadena, TX. The project is expected the be completed in 2021. The challenge was to find not only a way to commemorate the ceremony, but also show the polyethylene product in a creative way because it was the first time the Borstar® technology was to be used in the US.

Solutions

Brand IQ suggested having two separate pieces – one for memorializing the ceremony and one for showing off the new product – for maximum impact. The magnetic paperweight was proposed, but instead of making the background the Baystar logo, we thought it would be more eye catching to use the architectural drawing of the new facility and have the logo & event details engraved along the rim. A test tube with an engraved base was proposed for the unique polyethylene display.

Results

Both items fit what Baystar™ had envisioned and surpassed their expectations. The test tube was able to display the new product in a way that was user friendly & tied in to it’s scientific background and the paperweight was meaningful, but also functional. Reorders were submitted for both after the groundbreaking ceremony by the joint venture group because they wanted to continue to use them – even beyond memorialization of the ceremony.
